Design News

New Perth magazine.
- Hijacked, by Keith and Lottie. I don't know who they are, but I want to buy the Boring Postcards from Perth and the SPACE INVADER INVASION OF PERTH! Want to paint blank Babushkas?

Smooch.
Speaking of Perth, in case we haven't already pushed this magazine, go and buy a copy of Smooch. Issue No. 5 is currently on sale.

Design Cliches.
Even if you're not a designer, go and have a look at these cliches, as I can guarantee you you've put one in a report somewhere. Stop it.

Except maybe for bubbleheads - they serve a good purpose.

While you're at it - have a good look at "Visual Trends". Stars, CMYK, solar flares, flames, wicker balls (globes), weaves and whips, "puffies" (so cute), line dots, good drops, leaves, "hot dogs" and many more for good reading.

Annual Colour Forecast
Unusual colours, Moroccan Blue and American Beauty are colours, according to Pantone, that are leading the way. Mind you, in the US. In the "fall". There are some lovely colour combinations featured though, so take five minutes and have a squizz.

Malls of America
Vintage photos of old Shopping Malls of the '60s & '70s. They are quite cute. Strangely, some of them look like Garden City and the Myer in Fremantle.

The Unspoken Rules of Graphic Design
Our favourite is Number 16: If two designs are shown, a third will be requested. If provided, then one of the first two will be chosen.

And 36. Everything has to be done immediately, deadlines are incredibly important unless client has to provide materials or approve your work.

This is just cute
...where the artist (unnamed) takes kids' paintings and finishes them off beautifully. The Monster Engine (but don't be fooled - there are superheroes too.)

Ever wondered what it's like to...
...work at Pixar Studios? Have a look at Steve Jobs' Incredible Toilet Theory.

Art Direction on the Web
"Designers, programmers, and other specialists create essential elements of the whole. But the art director ties these parts together for maximum effect and results."
