Sorry about the giant image, but this tree was huge.
These trees are called strangler figs and are really impressive, if not a bit mean. Birds poo the strangler fig seeds into the crown of the host tree. The seed actually germinates on the tree, and starts dropping roots all the way down to the ground.
Once the roots hit the ground and start getting all strong because of the soil, they develop aerial roots and start to encircle the host tree, slowly strangling it to death. The tree in the middle rots away, leaving a giant strangler fig. This one is called the Curtain Fig tree, and is about 500 years old.
That's about as interesting as this page gets because I've only just realised that we only took two other photos in the tablelands with the digital camera (we were playing games with the Pentax).
