Holbrook
Holbrook is a little strange. Holbrook was on our way from Wangaratta to Canberra and we stopped because there was a large submarine sort of stuck in the ground. We thought we'd better stop and help and offer the good people of Holbrook some advice on where an appropropriate place for a submarine would be, but they seem to fancy themselves as submarine experts.
You'd think it was because Holbrook was a naval base (miles from the sea), or actually make the submarines, but actually the reason they have a big submarine stuck in the ground was because of World War Two.
The first settlers in Holbrook were German (Johann Pabst who owned the grog shop known as the Woolpack Inn), and the place was called Germanton. During the second world war that name became a little unpopular, so the residents of Germanton began looking for a new name. They had heard of a dude, Lieutenant Norman Holbrook, who guided a British B class submarine HMS B11 below a minefield in the Dardanelles to torpedo a Turkish battleship. He had never visited Germanton (or Australia for that matter), but the residents thought that was pretty cool so changed their name to Holbrook.
Once news of how cool we are spreads, we're sure there will be a host of towns springing up called Plackett or Wiese. Or Wackett.
