katherine

The first people to live in Katherine were the Jawoyn and Dagoman people, whose representatives are now strategic members on the Nitmiluk National Park board of directors. When the Overland Telegraph Station was built at Knott's Crossing, Katherine developed rapidly. Nearby is the Sportsman's Arms Hotel that was first run in 1883 by Tom Pearce of We of the Never Never.

We only stayed in Katherine for one full day, preferring to camp at Nitmiluk Gorge.

school of the air

Katherine

The School of the Air is the world's largest classroom. Most kids have their correspondence sent to their farms, then spend half an hour a day on the radio with their teacher and classroom.

This is the school's aerial. The school wasn't open for tours during the wet seasons.

alfred giles' letter

July 25th, 1889

"By your letter of November 26th, I am sorry to hear you are so great a sufferer - I saw Dr. Reed the other day and read him your general symptoms described in the paper you sent him for his more particular information and he gave me the new receipt I enclose for you, I do not send the Camomel or Quinine as I presume you have it in your Medicine Chest - if I were to venture an opinio I would suggest you try some good Australian red wine regularly everyday, when you return to the station, as I think the pains are more the result of debility more than anything else the result of overwork and anxiety, owing to your blook being too poor and thin. If so then good red wine will make it natural again, white wines will not have the same effect as red and take the wine until you have fulness (sic) in the head and bleeding from the nose and effect it always had upon me, for many years I had the fluidity of the blood and pains when I came home Dr Bridie told me I wanted good meat and drink and no Physick and this may be your case, at any rate if not better try and drink pure Australian red wine, not imported trash and eat plenty of beef not overdone and this with Quinine I think will make a new man of you."

Alfred Giles was suffering from malaria.
