nitmiluk gorge
On 31st March 1978 the Jawoyn people lodged a land claim for their traditional land including Nitlimuk (Katherine Gorge). After much controversy the claim was listed for hearing in 1982. The inquiry started in December 1993, was concluded in December 1985 and the decision was handed down in October 1987. The Jawoyn people took ownership of the land in 1989.
Nitmiluk National Park has 13 natural gorges. We took a boat cruise down the gorge due to lack of time, but you can also rent a canoe for $20 and canoe down them.

See the black things hanging off the trees? They are thousands and thousands of fruit bats.
