Parliament House
Parliament House was great - it's a pity we couldn't go while parliament was in session, you can never have too many creative abusive phrases in your vocabulary.
Speaking of abusive phrases, our Parliament Tour guide did the unspeakable to Neil and I. After the dry forty-five minute tour, he asked if we had any questions. Neil had a question about the republic, which he couldn't answer. He then asked Neil what part of Britain he was from. When Neil indignantly told him he was an Aussie, Bad Tour Guide Man said he thought Neil was a Pom because of his accent (what the?!), and that he should take it as a compliment!
There was a Centenary of Federation exhibition on when we visited - a Peoplescape where lots of dummy mannequins painted up to the likenesses of what ordinary Australians considered where important people in their communities - local priests, volunteer workers, celebrities and schoolkids.

Parliament on Capital Hill with the Peoplescape mannequins in front of it. |
| The Australian Crest, looking very sparkly on Parliament House. |

Lots of pretty mannequins, sitting on a hill. Bert Newton had a big moon for a head. |
| House of Reps in delightful Eucalyptus green. Speeches were limited to 20 mins after one Senator spoke for 12 3/4 of an hour on the riveting subject of proportional representation. |

The pinky-maroony coloured Senate. Senator means 'Old Man' in Latin. I wonder what Old Man Stott-Despoja thinks of that? |
