ubirr, northern territory
ubirr, kakadu
Ubirr is a giant rock in Kakadu which you may climb, which has unbelievable sweeping views of the surrounding wetlands. The views that you can see in these pictures normally at this time of year are completely underwater. The floods rise above the height of the trees. Due to the extremely dry Wet we've had, it looked like something out of Jurassic Park.

We bumped into a film crew from Holland that were making a documentary for the WWF starring some Dutch soapie celebrity. The ranger said he'd never met any bunch of people as loud as these in the park. They kept telling us to shhh.

An amazing kookaburra.

Mabuyu was dragging his fish on a string after a fishing expedition when a greedy person cut the string and stole his fish. That night, Mabuyu had waited until the theives had eaten his fish and were camped inside their cave near the East Alligator River. Then he blocked the cave with a huge rock. "Next morning they never came out. Because they pinched it they got punished. Kids, ladies and men - all dead, finished." - Bill Neidjie

Halfway up Ubirr Rock, looking out onto the floodplains..

Looking the same way further up the rock, down on the Dutch film crew.

180 degrees the other way, climbing up Ubirr.

From the top of the rock, looking down on what would normally be a flood. The rock on the left was the one used in Crocodile Dundee II.
